Betty June Mitchell Henderson entered this life on July 7, 1926 in Tampa, Florida, the first-born child of Harris Mitchell, Sr. and wife Lela Phillips Mitchell. In 1947, she married Walter Henderson who was born and raised in Owings, S.C., and together, they lived in Tampa for 74 years, during which time they operated Automotive Air Conditioning. For the majority of her working life, Betty was a nurse as well as an industrial nurse after her graduation from Nursing School in Atlanta, GA. Following the death of Walter, she eventually resided in Jena until the time of her death at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 25 days of age. Walter and Betty were the parents of Era Lea Henderson Crooks of Jena, wife of Steve H. Crooks, and her son, Walter H. Henderson, Jr., also of Jena, the husband of Mary Henderson. “BJ” as she was sometimes known, was “memaw” to Trey Henderson, Michelle H. Gross of Land of Lakes, FL, Brent McDaniel of Hickory Flat, MS, Leah C. Roberts of Alexandria, Kainna C. Messer of Zachary, and Stephen H. Crooks of Jena. In addition to her brother and only surviving sibling, Harris R. Mitchell, Jr., she is also survived by 7 great granddaughters and 9 great grandsons. She was predeceased by her parents, and brother, Robert Mitchell, and sister, Bertha Lea Mitchell. The family will receive visitors at House of Hope in Tampa on Bay to Bay Blvd., May 8th, from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida, on May 9th at 2 p.m. The family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
