Betty Jean Millar (née Osborne), a long-time resident of Redding, passed away on May 22, 2014 at age 89.
Betty was born the youngest of seven children on November 4, 1924. Legally blind from birth, Betty was educated at the California School for the Blind in Berkeley CA, Brea-Olinda Union High School, Fullerton Junior College and Santa Barbara Teachers' College. She and Richard Millar were married on August 17, 1951.
The Millars moved to Redding in 1987, having resided in Mar Vista and San Clemente CA, Grants Pass and Brookings OR. After the death of Richard Millar in 1989, Betty continued to maintain her home and large yard on her own, as well as be an active concert-goer. In 2005, at the age of 80, she acquired her first guide dog, Riviera (now retired), and subsequently, Wynn. As one bus driver stated, "First you came to know the dog by name---then you got to know the real treasure, and that was Betty. What a beautiful person she was."
Betty is survived by many dear friends, three nephews, eight nieces and their children and grandchildren. Aunt Betty, we will miss you dearly.
The family would appreciate donations to Guide Dogs for the Blind, 350 Ranchitos Road, San Rafael, CA 94903. www.guidedogs.com
The memorial service will be held on July 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Simpson University Prayer Chapel, 2211 College View Drive, Redding, CA 96003.
