Billy D. Adams Sr., of Pocono Summit, passed away Monday morning, June 27, 2011 at the Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center, in Wilkes -Barre, P A.
He was born on March 22, 1932 in Alliance, OH, and was a son to the late Joseph and Mary Ellen (McGeehan) Adams. Billy earned his Associate Degree from Keystone College and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Wilkes University.
Billy's military career spanned 26 years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Mr. Adam's decided to make a career of the army because he felt it was a decent life and a job. He found out that there was more to it than that; he enjoyed the camaraderie and having that feeling of belonging. He believed it to be a band of brothers and a closeness that is not found in other professions. He severed on many army post throughout the US and overseas. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Germany and wasn't sent to Korea until 1965. Billy saw combat serving two tours in Vietnam all of 1969 with the 9th Infantry division in the Mekong Delta and eight months of 1971 with the 101st Airborne Division close to the Demilitarized Zone that split North and South Vietnam along the 17th parallel. He earned the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. Billy earned several other commendations/ awards and metals. After retiring from the military as a chief warrant officer in 1975, Adams went to work for an electronics company that had an office at the Tobyhanna Army Depot. While there, he managed the office and wrote technical manuals on satellite communications equipment. After seven years at Tobyhanna, he worked for the government again at Fort Monmouth doing electronics work, mostly as a technical writer and editor, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He later returned to Tobyhanna Army Depot to work as an equipment repairman. He finally retired completely in 1995. He also spent much of his time being a member of the American Legion Post 413, Pocono Pines and Veterans of Foreign War Post 509, Tobyhanna. He served as a senior assistant to the district commander of the American Legion, ending a two year term as county commander of the American Legion.
Billy was a loving husband for 42 years to his wife Leona (Dusick) Adams, originality from Hollywood, PA. He had a passion for Amateur radio and playing golf.
Surviving are two sons: Billy D. Adams Jr, formerly from Brattleboro, VT and currently in Pocono Summit, Bobby D. Adams, of Weatherly, PA; two step sons: Robert Nicholas, of San Diego, CA; and Richard Nicholas, of Arizona; two daughters: Monika Welsh, of El Paso TX, Lona Adams, of Titusvile, FL; a step daughter: Ruth Ann Lawson, of Siloam Springs, AZ, two brothers: Donald Bailey, of Seabring, OH and John Bailey of Youngstown, OH; a sister Lona Adams, of Salem, OH; 13 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.
Family and Friends will gather on July 5, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home 27 Washington Street East Stroudsburg, PA. An Additional Viewing will be held on July 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 am. Funeral Services will follow beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Richards Jr. Military Honors will follow during Interment at Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst, PA ,
