Carol J. (DuBuque) Andrews, 68, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, after being stricken at home early on Nov. 25. She was born in Greenfield, Mass., on April 9, 1944, to the late Seward and Mabel (Perrault) DuBuque. Carol grew up in Shelburne Falls, Mass., and attended its schools graduating high school in 1962 from Arms Academy. She graduated from Westfield State College in 1966 with a BS in Education.
She was married to Hollis E. "Jack" Andrews soon after in June and they moved to Old Town, Maine, where Carol taught elementary school to the Penobscot Indian children, while Jack attended his senior year at the University of Maine at Orono. After his graduation, they returned to western Mass., residing in Greenfield.
On Nov. 3, 1970, their twin sons, Joel and Peter, were born. Joel died two days after his birth. Carol remained in the area with her family until 1972, when they relocated to south Florida, where Jack became an officer with the Miami Police Dept.
Carol was actively teaching while pursuing her Master's degree which she received from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. During her 40 years of teaching, she was a math and science teacher in Broward County for high achieving children. She took such joy in what she did while watching her students grow and excel in their education.
In 2009, Carol and her husband, after retiring, moved to Jacksonville in northern Florida to be near their son and his family.
Carol loved to spend time working in and around her home. She enjoyed walks, reading, playing cards, listening to jazz, attending the symphony, and family time. Her greatest joy was her two beloved grandsons, and with them, she enjoyed trips to zoos, parks and many vacations. Their yearly tradition of going to see the Nutcracker at Christmas time was a special event for her.
Carol held tremendous pride in her son Peter, who is a Special Agent with the Secret Service. While on the Presidential Protection Detail, parents of the agent get to meet the President when he visits the hometown of the agent. Carol met and chatted with then President Bush, and posed for a picture with her son, husband and the president. Carol and her husband returned to New England and Shelburne Falls almost yearly to spend time with family and visit locations that were meaningful to her.
How she loved Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, Maine! No matter how many times she vacationed there, she never tired of it. If there was an autumn that she could not travel North with Jack, Carol always instructed him to gather the colorful fall leaves to bring back to her students. Highlights of many years of travel were memorable trips to Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand where the beauty of the countries were always remembered by her.
In addition to her husband Jack, Carol is survived by her son, Peter and his wife Angela; grandsons. Nicholas, age 10, and Connor, age 8, all of Saint Johns; two sisters, Sharon Bellows and husband Cecil of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Patricia Harris of Shelburne Falls. She also is survived by four nieces, three nephews and many cousins ... all holding Carol close in their hearts.
