Cary Durfey ("Maxie") Allen passed away on September 23, 2012. He was born February 13, 1926, in Raleigh to James Octavius and Mettie Coley Allen, both deceased.
Cary was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School (Class of '44), and as a member of the Greatest Generation, served in the US Army Air Corps (68th AACSS) in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was a member of Trinity UMC. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Ace Hardware and Handyman Hardware, and for years was the manager of Person St. Variety Store.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Susan Heath in 1999; his brothers, Thomas Coley ("Bill") Allen, Benjamin Lacey ("Mac") Allen, and a sister Anne "Sue" Allen Montague.
He is survived by his daughters, Betsy (Rev. Skip) Williams, and Suzanne Armstrong (John) Cooper, and his grandsons: Sam Williams of Sarasota, FL, Matt Williams (Sarah) of Staunton, VA, Pete Armstrong of Knightdale, and Kyle Armstrong of Raleigh.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Rex Hospital and The Oaks at Mayview for their excellent care during Cary's illness, and a special thanks to Dr. William Dunlap for his compassionate care.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Trinity UMC, 824 N. Bloodworth St., Raleigh, NC 27604, on Wednesday, October 3, at 2 p.m., with Rev. John Michael McAllister officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity UMC.
