BARRIOS

Charles J. Barrios, age 72, passed on Saturday, February 2, 2013 in Baton Rouge, LA. Beloved father of Kim Barrios Elston (Scott Allen Elston, Sr.) Grandfather of Scott Allen Jr. and Triston Charles Elston. Former husband of Miriam Sandoz Barrios, and loving friend of Leslie Bernos Clark. Son of the late Roy Joseph and Amelia Childress Barrios. Brother of Roy J. Barrios, Jr., Thomas W. Barrios and the late Judy B. Moreci.

He was born in New Orleans on February 9, 1940. After graduating from Redemptorist High School in 1958, Mr. Barrios became a Thoroughbred jockey, racing successfully all over the country. He also served in the Army National Guard before working for the Times Picayune in distribution. He later transitioned back to the race track as a Thoroughbred trainer, competing mostly at the Fair Grounds and Jefferson Downs. After leaving horse racing, he worked for the New Orleans Traffic Court and Harrah's Casino until retirement. He will be remembered for his generous heart, perpetual smile, sharp wit, and the ability to bring laughter out of everyone.

After God made Charlie, He broke the mold. No one else could say or do the things he did, and one thing for certain, no one could ever forget him. He was the sweetheart of the family and will be sadly missed by all of us.
I can't help but think of the excited anticipation of God's angels standing in wait for him in heaven. I'm sure he'll have them in stitches in no time. Our turn is up, but he surely left us with a lot of joyous moments to remember. Ecclesiastes 7:1 says: A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. May you rest in peace and in joy unimaginable.....
Love, Jeanne Barrios

As a boy you were my weekend Dad. I would anxiously wait all week to go to your place in Folsom. Me, You, Aunt Mimi, Kim and Joc' would load up the green Dodge Ramcharger. I would work all day for a hamburger and a box of shotgun shells, but could not be happier. Helping you with horses, bush-hogging, running fence lines and even blowing up stumps with dynamite. When we were not working we would hunt and ride horses, the life! When I was in my late teens you gave me a paper route. I have no doubt that I was the worse paper boy you ever had, but you tolerated me as long as possible. I have many other memories of my "Uncle Charley B" that I will always remember and cherish. Rest in piece, I will never forget you.

Love you,
"E" Roy

I met Charles for the first time a few months ago while we were in town with my family for Thanksgiving. We ate together with Kim, Scott and my family. The man had me in stitches the entire time and left a life long impression on me -- he had the heart and soul of a fun loving young boy -- if I only have 1/2 of his spirit at his age I will be a happy man.

Charles, I have no doubt that you are living in the hearts, souls and eyes of your family
