Charles Talmage Henson, 78, of Morganton, went peacefully into the presence of his Lord on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at his residence. Born on March 28, 1935 in Burke County, NC, he was the son of the late Zennie Henson and Eva Weatherman Henson.
Mr. Henson graduated from Oak Hill High School and studied Banking and Finance at Indiana University. He served in the United States National Guard, was a charter member of the Oak Hill Ruritan Club, served on the Board of Trustees for Western Piedmont Community College for many years, served on the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes and served on the Board with Burke Christian Ministries.
Mr. Henson worked for First Citizens Bank for over 40 years and retired as Executive Vice President. After his retirement, he established Millstone Meadows Day Lily Gardens. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church where he held many offices. He also taught the Charles Henson Sunday school class until his health declined.
He had many loving attributes. He loved his Lord, his family, his friends, his church, gardening, fishing, nature, restoring antique cars and music; especially Blue Grass.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Gragg Henson; son, David Henson and his wife, Annette of Morganton; daughter, Lisa Byland and her husband, Greg of Valdese; granddaughter, Emily Byland; sisters, Oma Brown and her husband, Grady of Morganton and Mildred Metzger of Mobile, AL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Lawrence officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00-3:30 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1715 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690 or to Oak Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Columbarium Fund, 2239 NC 181, Morganton, NC 28655.
The family has entrusted Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with funeral arrangements.
