Dimitri Arvanitis was born to parents Sophia and Andreas Arvanitis on
December 16, 1921 in Ambelofito Messinias, Greece. He was the 2nd child and
only son of 4 children. He grew up in Ambelofito where he met and married
Afrodity in 1941.
They spent 68 years of life together. They had 5 children: 3 sons and 2
daughters: Sofie, Andreas, Kostas, Toula, and Sakis. They had 13 grandchildren
and 6 great grandchildren. Dimitri was an honest and hard-working man who took
pride in looking after his family and his farms. He was a good provider even
during times of hardship.
Dimitri and his wife first visited Canada for the in 1977 where they spent
time with their 5 children who had emigrated here. This would later be the
first of many visits to Canada, before they decided to permanently join their
This past fall, Dimitri fulfilled his wish of visiting his homeland of Greece
one last time, spending 2 months in Greece. After his return to Canada, Dimitri
became ill and was hospitalized on November 23. He spent his remaining days in
the hospital until he peacefully passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009.
Dimitri will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, children,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and friends.
