Donald B. Black, age 95, of Fall River died Thursday, January 17, 2013 at his residence. Born in Fall River, a son of the late William J. and Bridget T. (Keenan) Black, he was a lifelong resident of the city and a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1934.
Mr. Black worked as a pipefitter for the Newport Naval Base for 34 years, retiring in 1974 and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church for over 50 years where he was a lector, altar server and a recipient of the Marion Medal presented by Bishop Daniel A. Cronin. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at his church and at Charlton Memorial Hospital and received the "Top Hat" award from St. Vincent de Paul Society. A United States Navy Veteran, he served during World War II and was a member of the VFW St. Joseph Francis Post. He was a founding member of the KOC Father Francis Council #15405 and was the oldest active participant at the Boys and Girls Club.
He is survived by his sister; Agnes Black of Somerset and several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late William K., Raymond T., Francis R., and David G. Black.
His Funeral will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 8:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St. Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00AM in Sacred Heart Church, Linden St., Fall River. Visiting hours Monday from 4:00PM to 7:00PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, 160 Seabury St., Fall River, MA 02720. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.
