Doris Jean Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 18, 2014.

Doris Jean Smith, Age 91, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 in Palm Harbor Florida. She was born November 15, 1922 in Seneca Falls, New York.
Doris was the daughter of Thomas J. Campbell and Barbara McMahon Campbell.
She was a resident of Dunedin, Florida, since 1960. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Obtained Bachelors Degree in Nursing from St. Joe's Catholic Hospital School of Nursing in Syracuse, NY.
Doris served as a nurse in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was a M.A.S. H. nurse in southern France during the Battle of the Bulge.
Earned a Master's Degree in Public Health from Syracuse University where she met her husband of 64 years, Arthur G. Smith, M.D.
Doris and Art's early married life adventures led them from New York to Washington D.C., Japan, and Kentucky before finally settling in Dunedin in 1960.
Doris was a volunteer with the Junior League of Dunedin and was actively involved in development of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School.
Doris was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid gardener and a culinary wizard at creating amazing meals for her large family and all their friends. Everyone wanted to eat at the Smith's house. Doris also enjoyed reading, traveling, and attending all the home football games for the Florida Gators.
She is survived by her loving husband, Arthur, and her six children, Arthur Jr. (Carolyn), Dan (Sue), Barbara Dirscherl (Guy), Joel (Tessie), June Kirwin (Bill), and Peter (Sabrina). "Ani" will be dearly missed by her beloved, fourteen grandchildren.
Doris is also survived by her dearest brother, Thomas J. Campbell, Jr., and was predeceased by her sisters, Evelyn Hutchings and Barbara Carmody.
Doris has been a role model for what a mother should be for not only her own children but for all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her beautiful smile and sparkling blue eyes will be missed, but certainly never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to U.N.I.C.E.F. or the American Red Cross.

Loved your Mom and Dad growing up! Of course, Dr. Smith was everyones Pediatrician! My sister went to school with Artie, I went to school with you and my brother went to school with Pete. My parents were also good friends with them. My Mom was so sad when I told her of her passing. But what an amazing life she had! She will be missed, not just by us, but by the whole city of Dunedin. Thoughts and prayers coming to you and your whole family...

My very deepest sympathy to the wonderful Smith family and especially Dr. Smith. During my college years, Dr. and Mrs. Smith showed me a lot of love, incredible hospitality and unbelievable patience and grace. Proverbs 31 is an apt description of her lifetime impact on her family and loved ones. "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all' ". v 28ff
Love, David Ray (Clearwater)
