Dorothy Lorraine Dunning
Dorothy Lorraine Dunning was reunited with her husband Neal in their eternal home on Friday, November 9, 2012. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loving family. She was born to Frank and Lorinda White on July 17, 1929 in Decorah, Iowa and was one of the many from Iowa to move to Long Beach during the 1930s. Dorothy was a Long Beach Polytechnic High School Graduate and attended LBCC and USC School of Nursing. Dorothy loved and cherished her role as homemaker and mother until she became an office manager for LBUSD. She was the president of the California School Employees Association, Long Beach Chapter member of Women's Society of Christian Service, and United Methodist Women at California Heights. Dorothy was also an active member of P.E.O. Chapter JX until her passing. Dorothy had many, many talents which included cooking, playing piano, needlework, watercolor painting, gardening and music, though her greatest pride and joy were her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Dorothy was very proud of her Norwegian and Scottish heritage and kept Norwegian and Scottish traditions alive for the family each Christmas. In retirement, Dorothy and Neal purchased their dream home overlooking the ocean in Cambria, California. Neal and Dorothy celebrated 49 years of marriage before his passing in 1999. They were an excellent example of marriage, commitment, faith, and family values, and our home was never without love, laughter and music. Family members will carry on holding her lessons of love close to their hearts. Dorothy will be forever missed. Dorothy is survived by her 4 children, 7 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter: Carol and David Linn, Eric, Amy and Kelly Stephens, Marie and Tim Campion, Heather and Ryan Payne and "their sweet baby Ashlynn", Michelle, Elizabeth and Scott Johns, Robert and Theresa Dunning, Kyle and Scott, Paul Dunning and Carey VonGremp. Memorial contributions may be made to: California Heights United Methodist Church, 3759 Orange Ave., Long Beach, CA 90807.
