Dotty Bowen Hill Bailey, Third Ward School teacher dies at 90. Services March 29, 2011.
Her life's goal was to be a good school teacher, and that is what she did so well for 35 years. Born in 1921, Dotty Bowen grew up in Chickamauga, Georgia with her family who were in the cotton industry, Jewell-Bowen Mills. Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Wylde Bowen moved to Athens, GA where Mr. Bowen owned a cotton mill. Along with her sister, the late Emma Bowen Williams, she attended Lucy Cobb School in Athens. Both sisters graduated from the University of Georgia, where they also were members of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and Dotty Bowen was past President. She was also President of the UGA Pan-Hellenic Council and Motor Board Member, she was a Sweetheart of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. She received her Masters Degree of English from Auburn University and there she met and married her first husband, Dr. Charles Prothro Hill. They had two children, Cathleen Prothro Hill and Charles Latham Hill. Dr. Hill had private veterinary practices in Griffin and in Newnan, Georgia.
Dotty Bailey taught at Third Ward School for 27 years, where she adored her pupils. She emphasized the importance of reading and often read to her students from her rocking chair. She prepared many PTA programs with the most special one being given by her friend and poet, Robert Frost.
She and David Jackson Bailey married in 1958. They resided on Kincaid Avenue and Tomochichi Road in Griffin. Mr. Bailey was employed by the Georgia State Hwy. Dept. before his retirement. Dotty Bailey was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Griffin, where she taught Adult Sunday School. She was a member and Silver Sister of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and Past President in Griffin. She was also a member of the daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Bailey is survived by her husband, Jack Bailey of Griffin, her daughter Cathleen Hill Stephens of Highland Beach, Florida, her son Charles Latham Hill of Naples, Florida, granddaughter Meme Mary Ella Stephens of Rockmart, Georgia, grandson Robert Barton Stephens, Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn., great-granddaughter Danielle Cathleen Krukowski of Rome, GA, nephews Allen Bowen Williams and David Ernie Stewart and his wife Linda Lee Stewart of Griffin, niece Rosemary Bailey Monroy of Griffin and other nieces and nephews. Her deceased sisters were Emma Bowen Williams and Rachel Bowen Brown, her brother Dr. John Latham Bowen all of Griffin, and Hannah Jewell Bowen Martin of Sandy Springs, GA.
Services for Mrs. Bailey, who died after a lengthy illness, will be on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 graveside at the Oak Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be at the Haisten McCullough Funeral Home, Griffin, GA at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
