EARL RAYMOND MARS, SR , 88
Earl Raymond Mars, Sr, 88 years old passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 peacefully at Oakmont Nursing Home in Humble, Texas. Mr. Mars was born October 15, 1924 to Creed and Irene Mars in Houston, Texas, the third of 4 children. He graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1941.
Mr. Mars served in the Coast Guard in World War II as a boat swain's mate. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the Asianic-Pacific ribbon with one bronze star. He met his first beautiful bride, Mildred Margaret Mars at Jefferson Davis High School in 1941 before he went off to the war.
In 1943, Mr. Mars began a long career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Houston, Texas. He had various positions with his last one being a PBX installer, but climbing telephone poles was the position he enjoyed the most. He often told stories of climbing the poles and had some very strong and muscled arm and calf muscles to show for it. In 1988 he retired from Southwestern Bell after 45 years. Throughout Mr. Mars' life, you could find him on weekends playing the steel guitar and singing in bands at the local honky tonks. Music was one of his great passions and he knew a song for everything. He was actively involved in the Elk's club and loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was highly regarded by all that knew him for his kindness, humor and sweet dimpled smile.
Mr. Mars is survived by his second beautiful wife, Dorothy Mars; son Earl R. Mars, Jr. and daughter, Diane Carlile; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and a sister; his daughter Brenda Joyce Faulkner and first wife Mildred Margaret Mars.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 at Brookside Funeral Home at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Brookside Funeral Home in Houston, Texas.
