Edwin Bates, 93, of Seaside, died April 21, 2010. He was born Edwin Frederick Bates on August 4, 1916, in Bloomington Illinois to Frederick and Pearl (Engelken) Bates. Edwin lived with his father for 5 years in Florida following his mother's death in 1926.
He moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1930 where he met the love of his life, wife of 69 years Betty J. Bates. They were married February 27, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ed retired from the Monterey Post Office as a mail carrier after 32 years. He loved fishing, camping, traveling, cooking, spending time with his family and living life to its fullest. He was known for his sense of humor, his generosity and kind loving heart, and was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.
Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mae Quiggins and Dorothy Bates Barnhart, and nephews, Raymond Barnhart and Stanley Barnhart.
Edwin is survived by his wife Betty and brother in law Patrick Cosio of the family home in Seaside, niece Marilyn Annotti of Elk Grove, numerous nieces and nephews and his pet schnauzer "Chili".
He will be missed dearly by family and friends.
The family would like to thank the Hospice/VNA nurses and staff members for all their wonderful help and support not only to Ed but to the family as well.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, from 1:00 - 8:00 PM at Mission Memorial Park Chapel with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM.
A Funeral Mass will be held April 28, 2010, 10:00 AM at the St. Francis Xavier Church, 1475 La Salle Ave. Seaside, CA 93955. Interment following service at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Avenue, Seaside, CA 93955.
