I am honored to have had the opportunity to meet Eldzier Cortor and hear his thoughts about his work and his experiences. He was truly a remarkable man whose contributions, artistic and personal, will live on. I was deeply saddened to learn of his death -- he had such a spark about him right up until the end. So hard to believe that he climbed the "Rocky Steps" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to attend an exhibition opening -- only a little over a year ago! He will be greatly missed. My condolences to all of his family.

I deeply admire Mr. Cortor's work. And while he has made his transition, his spirit will live on through his work, and for this I am deeply grateful. My deepest sympathy to the family for your loss.

Fine artist whom I have long admired. Your enigmatic paintings and beautiful depiction of Black Woman were ground-breaking.

Michael, I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with your father and sharing his experiences with the Associated American Artists this past February at his 2015 Legends Award at the Art Institute of Chicago.
He was a wonderful artist and a wonderful man.

As a sculptor I have admired Mr. Cortor's work for many years. I am inspired by his portrayal of black women and the style in which he rendered their form. Ayokunle Odeleye / Stone Mountain, Ga.

I never got to meet Eldzier Cortor but I have been profoundly shaped by his stunning images and paintings. I wanted to simply bid him Adieu here on this memory page. He came into my life through two of his actual paintings which I still have. My aunt and uncle owned an apartment building in New York City in the 1940's. My Cortor was a young painter to whom they rented a room. During two months of his tenure at the building he was unable to come up with the rent. He asked Aunt Otelia if she would take a painting instead. They said "Yes, of course," having no idea Mr. Cortor would live to become one of our greatest art treasures. I am warmed everyday by this story because it is the story of a young married black couple who supported a young unknown black artist by valuing his art and it is also the story of a young unknown black artist who knew to value himself and his art in the 1940's when value was a priceless word. God Speed Eldzier Cortor. I hope we meet on the other side.
