Elmer "Fudd" Grover, Jr., 74, of Marlborough, a life long resident of Marlborough, died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Langdon Place of Keene, following a period of declining health.
He was born in Marlborough on March 27, 1939, the son of Elmer & Geneva (Cram) Grover, Sr. He grew up in Marlborough and graduated from Marlborough High School in 1957.
He served in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1964.
Fudd married Donna McCarthy at Stone Pond in Marlborough on August 10, 1991.
He worked for 30 years for Metropolitan Life before he retired.
Fudd was very active in the community. He served as moderator and sexton for the town of Marlborough for many years. He retired from The Marlborugh Fire Department after 27 years of service. He was responsible for starting the annual fireman's breakfast and the harvest supper.
He has been a member of Keene Elks Lodge for 26 years. He was their secretary for many of those years.
Fudd was also, at the time of his death, a member of the Marlborough American Legion for 34 years. He had been Vice-commander, commander & treasurer. He also served as the chief cook for all the Sunday breakfasts and many of the suppers. His love for cooking never ended.
He was also the current president of the Marlborough Thief Protection Society.
He loved camping with all the great friends he met who become some of his best friends. He loved playing cribbage, listening to country music, going to York Beach and Cape Cod. In the earlier days, he enjoyed being a member of the Barber Shoppers in Keene. Of course, he always looked forward to Spring training and seeing his beloved Red Sox. He'll coach them from above to make sure they win another world series as he did every day watching them.
Fudd will be remembered most for the thing he loved best. Working with all the youth in Marlborough coaching Little League, Babe Ruth and junior high basketball. There are few kids in the community whose lives he did not touch. Nearly a day would go by where he wasn't spotted with a baseball bag, basketball and a whistle around his neck with a car full of kids who were headed to a game. His guidance, generosity, love and support of the kids that he was surrounded by is unmatched.
