Elon Hartley Eldred, 96, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.
He was born April 15, 1916, at home in Tekonsha, to E. Robin and Belle Hartley Eldred. Elon was the eldest of five children.
He attended the Grub Oak Grade School and graduated from Tekonsha High School in 1934. After high school, Elon took a Greyhound bus trip, which included two World's Fairs (New York and San Francisco). In 1962, he took his family to the Seattle World's Fair, and he always enjoyed sharing about the trips with everyone. Elon was a sweet and gentle man who loved traveling, bird watching and his family and friends.
While employed at Randall's Chicken Products in Tekonsha, Elon met his bride of 58 years, Mildred Roush Eldred. They were married on January 25, 1941, in her parents' home in Union City. Elon was also employed at Union Steel in Albion. He was a long time dairy farmer in Union City, as well as being the city mail carrier. He retired from the Union City Post Office as a rural carrier.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, on January 6, 2000, daughter, Alice Kay (Lloyd) Green, his parents, brother, Russell A. and sisters; Amelia B. and Bessie (Melvin) Johnson.
Elon is survived by three daughters; Sandra (Ed) Grooms of Harvest, AL, Linda (Ron) Whitcomb of Union City, Joy (Tom) Sweitzer of Coldwater, brother, Douglas (Loralee) Eldred of Union City; grandchildren; Lesa Erb, Lori Cosco, Lance Grooms, Jennifer Copp, Matthew Grooms, Sara Henry, Hollie Oursler, Darrin Whitcomb, Tracy Bowers, Kristin Stanfill, Kellie Sweitzer, 15 great grandchildren, and a few great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with two hours of visitation prior to the service at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City, with Pastor Robert Tharp of the Coldwater Church of the Nazarene, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Maple Lawn in Coldwater or the United Methodist Church in Union City.
