Elwyn S. Brown, M.D., 92, of Kansas City, MO passed away May 4, 2013. Visitation will be held 10-11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 9 at Red Bridge United Methodist Church, 636 E. 117th St., Kansas City, MO 64131.
Dr. Brown was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Red Bridge United Methodist Church. A member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, he achieved three degrees from the University of Iowa including his M.D. in 1950. Dr. Brown spent 12 years at the Roswell Park Institute in Buffalo, New York (a cancer treatment center) doing research on the absorption of carbon dioxide in anesthetic circuits. He held numerous patents which impacted the development of modern anesthesia equipment. He then moved to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO where he was the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief for 21 years, retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan; a daughter, Bonnie (Asher) Ertel of Kansas City; a son, Rick (Leslie) Brown of Overland Park, KS; a brother, Dean (Maeola) Brown of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; and four grandchildren, Sean and Gary Smith and Abby and Sadie Brown.
