Emily A Berenda, age 88, longtime resident of Rhinelander and Tomahawk, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 2, 1923, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Frank and Julia (Zauszniewska) Pienkowski. She married Joseph Robert Berenda June 5, 1949. She worked as a nursing assistant until she went back to school and graduated in 1975 from Northwest Technical College in Wausau with a nursing degree. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk and St Mary's in Rhinelander until her retirement in 1983. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Emily is survived by her son Bruce Berenda of Madison, her daughter Pamela Messina of Oregon, WI, a brother Vic (Betty) Pienkowski, three grandchildren, Gregory and Michael Messina and Jenni Zaremba and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six brothers; Vince, Matt, Stanley, Walter, John and Frank a sister, Sally and one son William.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Nativity of our Lord (St Mary's Site) at 10:30 A.M. with Father John Gerritts officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 14, 2011 until time of service at the church. Inurnment will follow at St Mary's Cemetery.
