I met Ernie in 1st grade at Study Elementary. Went through Portage JH before my family moved to FL. He was the tallest kid and I was the shortest. We became good friends. A great person and one I still remember to this day.

I just learned of Dr. Starks passing during a search to see if he was still a professor at Texas A&M. I am heartbroken. Dr. Starks was one of only two black professors I had while a student at A&M. His courses had such an impact on me. I still have a binder of notes and handouts from his classes that I refer to often. Dr. Starks inspired me so much, I took two of his classes. He was an amazing professor and historian. Rest well Dr. Starks!

I just saw this notice and I'm heartbroken.
I remember him so well as a graduate student at the University of Houston. He was such a positive presence in the department and we were all so proud of his professional success.
Rest in peace, condolences to his family.

I just came across this after Googling Dr. Starks to try to get his email address because I wanted to catch up with him. I graduated from Texas A&M over a decade ago, yet I still think about my favorite professor. He has forever impacted the way I think and the way I look at life. I took my first class with him to satisfy a requirement but then I was hooked, and took every class with him that I could, even though I was a genetics major and his liberal arts classes didnt towards my major. Rest in peace, Dr. Starks. You are missed.

I am a proud alumni of Sam Houston State, and was recently trying to re-establish contact with Dr. Starks, who I had as a professor over 25 years ago. I was saddened to learn of his passing, but also pleased to read of his career success. Due to his thoughtful and well-reasoned approach, he is one of the few profs I remember by name, and quite well. I appreciated his ability to deliver potentially controversial subject matter in a matter-of-fact and compelling manner. I am grateful to have had exposure to Dr. Starks and his expertise, especially after having grown up and attended high school in southeast Texas. His influence better prepared me for my subsequent career in a diverse organization, mostly working in faraway places amongst different cultures. Interestingly, I was assigned in Kuwait at the same time it appears he was in Qatar. My sincere condolences to his family, and rest in eternal peace Dr. Starks.

I have such fond memories of spending time with Ernest and Aeriel in Doha. He was so proud of her and would laugh as he told stories about his first days as a father. We had hoped to catch up in London this year, and when I didn't hear from him I was so saddened to learn of his passing. Sending much love to Aeriel and the family. Ernest was a man who touched many hearts. He loved to sing and he had such a generous spirit. He will be missed by so many, and will always be remembered.

I was so sorry to learn recently about this terrible loss. Ernest was one of the first graduate students I met when I arrived as a new assistant professor at the University of Houston. He was such a lovely and outgoing person, I truly enjoyed all my interactions with him. The Department has always been so proud of his accomplishments. We will all miss him.
With my most heartfelt condolences to his family,

Dr. Starks was a dear friend. I work in the Payroll Office at TAMU and he often visited my office. In addition to discussing business we discussed his career and the books he had written. Last month he came by my office and we was going to bring me one each of his books as i was interested in reading them. When he never brought them by that is when I discovered his passing. I will truly miss his visits. Respectfully,Danny Grimes, TAMU Payroll Services, 979-845-2779, General Services Complex Suite 1201

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family. Ernie and I met in college and became sweethearts. We never lost touch with one another even though our paths took different turns. I had the utmost respect for him as a man and as a person. He was the kind of guy that always stayed in touch and had a genuine concern for my well being. I will miss our long talks and his many long winded "speeches" about life. He loved his family and we would often talk about our upbringing as Indiana natives. He often talked about desiring the kind of relationship that he saw with his parents and his brother Mike. Even though he traveled the world, he took Indiana and his early life experiences with him. He was a true friend. I loved him very much. I grieve with you all because he was a part of me too. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful man with this world, if only for a brief time. Rest in peace, my friend. Until we meet again.

Shocked and saddened. I went through Portage and Elmhurst with Ernie. We had many classes together. I have fond memories of all of the basketball and football games-city champs several times- I attended. Ernie was a superstar. In a conversation with him nearly 10 years ago, he shared how much he loved being a professor, traveling the country doing research and writing his books and of course his children. He was so passionate and loved his life. What a terrible loss for all who knew him. My sincere condolences to family, classmates, teammates, his teachers and coaches and the students-even strangers- he touched during his short life.
