Mr. Eugene (Gene) McArthur Beard, age 86, of 802 Highland Ave., Rome, passed away at a local hospital November 1, 2009.
Mr. Beard was born in Floyd County January 29, 1923. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1942 shortly after his graduation from high school and served until November of 1945. He was in the 20th Air Force division in the Pacific theater of action serving in the 505th bomb group on Tinian Island, and served as a communications operator. After an honorable discharge at the end of World War II, he was employed for a short time with the Engineering Dept. of Floyd County and the GA. D.O.T. He was first employed by the City of Rome in April of 1947 and appointed to the office of City Engineer in January of 1963 where he served until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1988. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of West Rome Baptist Church, a member of the Cherokee Lodge #66 F&AM, the Rome Chapter #26 R.A.M., the Rome Council #8 Knights Templar, and the Shanklin- Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents Donald E. Beard and Dorothy Mable Hammond Beard, and his first wife Vivian Essie Beard.
Survivors include a daughter Deborah Brown of Rome, grandson Brennen Shaw Brown of Rome; two sisters Beverly Chandler and Gwendolyn Murdock both of Rome. Also surviving are nieces Cheryl Saxon, Marilyn McLean and three nephews Robert Murdock, Jr., Michael Murdock, James Harry Lovelace III, and former wife Grace Diane Brinson.
Services for Mr. Beard will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Daniel's Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Adams officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until the funeral hour. Interment will follow at East View Cemetery. There will be a Called Communication of Cherokee Lodge #66 F&AM for the purpose of attending the funeral and military rites by the Shanklin- Attaway Post #5 Honor Guard of the American Legion.
