Freddie Carroll Goss, SR
June 17, 1939 – April 1, 2013
Rev. Freddie Carroll Goss, Sr., 73, of Savannah, went to be with his Lord and savior after suffering a short illness. He was surrounded by his family.
He was born June 17, 1939 in Elberton, Georgia, to the late Charles Allen Goss and Susie Emma Booth Goss.
He attended Emanuel College and then transferred to the University of Georgia where he graduated with a teaching degree. He then taught school in Cobb and Paulding County for two years. While in college he was called into the ministry and developed a passion for it. He worked and taught at Mount Zion Church, in Danielsville, Georgia.
He married Merlin Burkhalter Goss in 1963, and accepted the call to the ministry in 1964, where he became Pastor of First Assembly of God in Dallas, Georgia for nine years until 1973.
In 1973 Freddie and Merlin, and their two children Freddie, JR and Angela moved to Savannah, Georgia and began pastoring Southside Assembly of God. He pastored there for sixteen years until 1989.
Rev. Goss was instrumental in starting First Assembly of God in Hinesville, Ga.
Then in 1991, Freddie became Pastor of Islands Assembly of God in Savannah. He pastured there for fourteen years before retiring from pastoring in 2005.
His timeless sense of humor and passionate delivery transcended all age groups. A measure of any man would be how many lives that they have touched, but for Fred Goss, that would not only be thousands of lives touched but thousands saved. He will always be the rock by which future generations of the Goss family are built and an example for us all of what God intends for us to be.
He was also passionately involved with other ministries that include Coastal Georgia Tres Dias, CSRA Tres Dias, Kairos prison ministry and Stillwell Towers for 35 years.
After retiring, Freddie and Merlin continued in the ministry by returning to Southside Assembly of God. At Southside they oversaw the JOY (Just older Youth) Fellowship. He taught the men's Wednesday Bible Study and the Junior Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Merlin Burkhalter Goss, of Savannah, Ga; two sons, Freddie C. "JR" Goss, Jr., (Marla) of Pooler, Ga; and Kevin Brian Goss (Ashley) of Savannah, Ga; daughter, Angela Goss Bennett (Greg) of Savannah, Ga; three sisters, Dianne Adams of Marietta, Ga; Linda Harris of Jacksonville, Fla, and Cindy Berry (Jimmy) of Acworth, Ga; Grandchildren, Christopher Goss (Jenna), Matthew Goss, Gracyn Bennett, Emma Goss, and Ava Goss.
