Gary William Dean passed away in Calgary on December 29, 2012 at the age of 76. Gary is survived by his three sons Nelson, Randal and Ryan Dean and by his two sisters Shirley Johnson of Nanaimo, B.C. and Carol Terry of Edmonton, AB. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Isabel, Lorenz, Rebecca, Vanessa and Gary Jr. and also by his partner Joyce Sutherland. Gary is predeceased by his parents Rita and Raymond Dean and by his sister Aldie Jones.
He was born in Edmonton, AB on December 8, 1936 and in his youth he loved to play hockey and baseball, being active and gifted in many sports. After graduating from high school, he spent his early years as a derrick man working on various oil rigs throughout Alberta. Gary then earned a Bachelor of Arts and his subsequent Masters of Arts (Psychology) from the University of Alberta. He later went on to complete his Doctorate of Education at UCLA with honors. Gary spent the balance of his career working for Mount Royal College (MRC) in Calgary, devoting over 32 years of service until he retired in 1996. He held various positions at MRC including VP of Administration, Professor and also as a Student Counselor.
In his later years at MRC, Gary was certified to practice Rational Emotive Therapy which he earned while attending the prominent Albert Ellis Institute in New York. Gary spent his retirement years honing his snooker and billiards skills and he greatly enjoyed league and tournament play.
Gary was a loving father who treasured his grandchildren. He was a loyal friend with a great sense of humor and he cherished the time that he shared with Joyce and their many summers spent together at Osoyoos Lake, BC. Gary was a kind and loving person and his indelible memory shall forever lie upon our hearts.
A Memorial Service was held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South, (at Lake Fraser Gate) Calgary on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.
