Mr. George C. Akins, 80, of Cartersville, Georgia died peacefully in the arms of his family on Friday, August 13th.
Mr. Akins was born in 1930 in Bartow County, son of deceased Lillian Black Akins and Gordon Van Akins. Survivors include his wife, Inis Shearl Akins; Daughter and Son-in-Law, Sandy and Chuck Spinner; Brothers, Tom Akins of Cartersville and Charles Akins of Douglasville; Granddaughter, Holly Spinner Allen and her husband, Christian C. Allen; Grandson, Mark A. Spinner and wife Brooke Mathison Spinner of Cartersville, as well as, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his much loved and respected brother-in-law, Stanley Shearl, Canal Fulton, Ohio.
Mr. Akins retired from his own business in the late 80's. He was very creative and liked to work with wood and putter around his shop making gifts for his grandchildren such as little locking boxes, hand-carved hearts, doll beds and bird houses. He had a great respect and love for nature. While he was a tall, straight, strong fisherman and hunter, his soft heart shone through when he held a baby, visited old folks or helped a sick person or animal in trouble. He had a terrific sense of humor and his family's "George Stories" will be told for generations to come.
The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, on Sunday, August 15th from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. A private family graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Salvation Army, 770-387-9955.
