Giuseppa Avanzato, 90, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday November 11, 2012 at the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born On March 5, 1922 in Serra di Falco, Italy, the daughter of Salvatore and Maria (Cali) Giardina. She married Diego Avanzato on December 31, 1941and he predeceased her on March 16, 1998.
Mrs. Avanzato was a member of St. Mary's Church, and the Italian American Club.
She was a seamstress, and worked for Oneonta Dress Company and the Dietz Street Dress Company. She also supported her sons in the operation of the Italian Kitchen and most recently Stella Luna Ristorante.
Mrs. Avanzato was skilled in knitting and crocheting, and took great pleasure in making scarves and mittens for friends and family. She loved to travel, and made many trips to Italy. Mostly, she adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Antoinette (Jack) Ragona of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; three sons, Salvatore (Josephine) Avanzato of Petersburg, NJ, Vincenzo (Ruth) Avanzato of Oneonta, and Antonio (Rosemarie) Avanzato of Oneonta.
Her grandchildren, Guy, Angela Jo-Jo, Dino, Diego, Jeanette, Giuliva, Dino, Giacomo, Joey, Olivia, Gianluca, and Massimo; her great grandchildren, Gabriella, Daniel, Enzo, Maximo, Raffaele, Luca and Madison-Bella; her sisters, Carmela (Rosario) Vento of Oneonta, Anna Turco, Diega Giardina of Italy; her brother, Jack Giardina of Italy, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins in Oneonta and Italy.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Francesca Messina, Vincenza Giardina, and Antoinette LaVersa.
A funeral mass will be offered on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 11 am in St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta with the Rev Joseph Benintende, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 2 to 5 pm at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.
