Glendon "Glen" Bowden, 92
Yarmouth – Glendon Fitts Bowden, 92, formerly of Hampden, died on his birthday, January 4, 2013. He was born on January 4, 1921 in Dexter, ME one of five children of Carroll and Lena (Fitts) Bowden. Raised on the family farm in Stetson he attended area schools and graduated from Maine School of Commerce, now Husson University. After graduation he taught Commercial courses at Corinna Union Academy. Shortly after Pearl Harbor Glen enlisted in the US Navy and for three and a half years he was a radio operator on an LST seeing action in all the major battles of the South Pacific.
After discharge Glen returned to Maine and began a lifelong career in the trucking industry, first with Border Express then A.J. Cole and Sons. On June 21, 1947 he had the good fortune to marry Verlie (Moss) L. Walls and together they made their home in Hampden and raised two children. Glen's time and dedication with A.J. Cole and Sons can been seen in the steady growth of Coles Express as an important trucking operation and his retirement in 1990 after 31 years as President and CEO.
Glen's life focused on family and business. It is his love of family and dedication to hard work that will be remembered by those who love him. It was only in retirement that he pursued his interest in harness racing, mostly in the Bangor area, and he had a measure of pride in having "a few winners". Winters in Florida were also enjoyed.
Glen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Verlie (Moss) Bowden of Yarmouth; his daughter Glenda Jo Bowden of Belmont; his son Chris Bowden and his wife Ellen of Cumberland; his grandchildren: Holly Jo Ward, Adam Bowden, Eric Bowden, Mandy Axelson, Samantha Bowden; his great-grandchildren: Abbie Jo Ward, Lars Axelson, Owen Axelson, Finley Bowden; his sister Dora Dubois and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother George and his sisters Eileen and Agnes.
