Gloria Mae "Mame" Hicks, age 87, of Perrysburg, Ohio passed away peacefully on July 3, 2014 at Otterbein of Perrysburg. She was born on May 28, 1927 in Waterloo, Indiana to Lyston and Frances (Cherry) Searfoss and she later moved to Perrysburg where she raised three children with Chester Hicks.
A long- time resident of East Sixth street she warmly opened her doors and pool to family, neighbors, and generations of children as a home child care giver of over 100 children, many of which described her as a second mother or grandmother. Gloria was an avid knitter who hosted weekly, the "Witty Knitters" Club, and she was known for being everyone's best friend who brightened the room with her infectious laughter and never ending curiosity. Although she never imagined herself being happy anywhere besides her house, Otterbein became home to her and she loved it there making new friends, and enjoyed her fellow residents and wonderful caregivers. Gloria loved her family and friends. Her attitude was inspiring and she always had a smile on her face. She loved her 87 years of life, but more than anything she loved Jesus and was looking forward to her heavenly home. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Perrysburg and in her spare time she enjoyed collecting nesting chickens.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Bette Lockard. She is survived by her children, Jason O. (Ila) Hicks, Timothy F. (Marcia) Hicks and Pamela I. (Bill) Schooler; grandchildren, Tracee (Brett Harlett) Hicks, Matthew (Harshal Sanghavi) Hicks, Jeffery (Mallory) Hicks, Timothy (Jenna) Hicks, Sarah (Mathew) Hammitt, Christopher Schooler, and Hannah Schooler; step grandchildren; Scott (Debbie) Ferrell, Morgan (Daniel) Rizzo, and Katelyn (Nick) Peterson as well as thirteen great grandchildren; sister, Carla (James) Flegal and brother, Kim (Debbie) Searfoss.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary in Perrysburg (419-874-3133) from 1:00 -6:00 P.M. where a Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 P.M. An expression of sympathy may be made to either Otterbein of Perrysburg or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Gloria was always such a happy, lovely woman. I knew her through water aerobics at Holiday Park, the First United Methodist Church and she cared for my kids. She was always so generous and loving to all. I am so sorry to read of her passing. The picture of her in her pool is pure Gloria. Though we moved from Perrysburg five years ago, we think of her often.
Sending prayers and hugs for all who loved her. She was a special person.
Peace,
Liz, Jim, Sloane and Ian Larson-Shidler

To Tim, Jay, and Pam; I want to express my deepest sympathy to what everybody knows is the passing of such a terrific lady - you own dear sweet
mother. To describe your mother's wonderful atrabutes - I would not to know even where to begin! She was alway so kind, and welcoming. She was so gracious, and thoughtful. She had a way to light up every room, and to always make anybody feel better. To be sure she is with her Creator, and is at peace. She is suffering no more, but now is with the angels.

Gloria is home now, in the loving arms of her savior. We met Gloria when she agreed to babysit my daughter, Kylene. One day after I picked Kylene up from Gloria's, she said to me "I want to be just like Gloria when I grow up". What an amazing person and what a remarkable life! She will be so fondly remembered. Auntie Mame, You were always a safe haven when I was a kid. No matter what was going on in my life, when I was in your home, I was loved and protected. Going to your house was like going to Disneyland.....the toy closet, the freezer full of ice cream treats that I could have without permission, the spaghetti dinners at the "kids table", and the never ending hugs. As an adult I loved hanging out with you, mom and grandma, as we talked and laughed into wee hours of the night, about EVERYTHING! Ha, ha. I love you so much. My heart hurts as though I lost my mom all over again. xoxoxoxo

Dear Pam, Bill, Sarah, Matt, Chris and Hannah,
We are so very sorry for the loss of such a wonderful Mother and Grandmother. She truly was a friend to everyone and welcomed everyone into her home. I will never forget all my visits to her house starting in first grade, when I would sit in the kitchen and listen to her laugh. We are all blessed to have known her.

Love you gram. You were such a special lady. You were a safe, loving, kind, and truthful place for so many. Your back door was always revolving. You made everyone feel uplifted, joy filled, loved, and accepted. I will miss you so much my sweet grandma and friend. Thank you for all you taught us and legacy you have left us. You were so excited and ready to go to heaven. The way you loved Jesus was inspiring and sincere. I know you are free and loving every second of your new home.
