At three months old he moved with his parents and 2 brothers to England where his father was stationed with the U.S. Army. In the spring of 1953 the family returned and moved to the North Kitsap area. Shawn, as he was known to family, friends and classmates, graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1969.

Honorably discharged in 1986, Shawn returned to Kitsap County and worked at various jobs, the last of which was as a security officer at Naval Supply Center Bremerton.
Unable to work due to disabilities, and having no children of his own, he turned to helping others. While living in West Bremerton he would collect old bicycles, repair them and give them to area children. After moving to View Crest Village in East Bremerton where he was known as Ian to his friends and neighbors, he continued his spirit of giving sharing stories of his childhood and military travels to purchasing musical instruments for children who expressed an interest in music but were less fortunate than he was.
Shawn was preceded in death by his parents in 2003. Survivors include his brothers Bruce (Katie), and Brian (Geri) of Poulsbo and sister Carol of Hawaii, numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Gregory Shawn Ian Austin was a unique man in many ways. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
