Gretchen Aldrich, 81, passed away Friday, August 13, 2010 at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM, with a Trisagion Service at 7 PM, Monday, August 16, at Ankeny Funeral Home, 1510 W. First St. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, 1110 35th St. in Des Moines with burial in Elkhart Cemetery.
Gretchen was born March 12, 1929 to George and Lois Vlassis in Des Moines. She was a long time resident of Elkhart and was active in the Daughters of Penelope and the Ames Women of The Moose. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines and was a member of St. George Church. Gretchen worked for the USDA for 31 years and was City Clerk in Elkhart for 10 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, taking trips to Hawaii with family, doing needle work, and playing bingo at Sunny View.
Survivors include her sons, George (Gloria) Kappos of Ankeny, Michael Kappos of Elkhart, and Steven (Stephanie) Kappos of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Ashley (Chad) Klonglan, and Jordan, Molly and Whitney Kappos; great grandchildren, Isaac and Carson; and brothers, Gus Vlassis, Jim (Jeanette) Vlassis, and Tom (Sophie) Vlassis; sister, Demetra Wolfe; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Theodore Kappos; and second husband, Harold Aldrich.
