Harry Hollis Arehart, 85, of Stuarts Draft passed away Friday, December 23, 2011 at Emeritus at Staunton surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 3, 1926 in Augusta County, Virginia, the first child of the late Harry L. and Beulah B. Arehart.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Sylvia M. Arehart; his precious daughter Alvina A. Wise; as well as four dear Arehart brothers: Homer, Eddie, J.T. and Kyle.
After attending Stuarts Draft High School, Hollis went to work at E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company in Wayensboro. During WWII he served 20 months in the Marine Corps, 13 months of which were at Pearl Harbor. He resumed employment at DuPont after his military service. Upon retirement, Hollis had been with the company 42 years.
Hollis was a life-long member of White Hill Church of the Brethren, serving in many capacities including Sunday School teacher and church treasurer. He served as a member and officer of the local P.T.A. During his retirement years he could be found using his electrical skills on jobs for friends and family. He also thoroughly delighted in the work and fellowship of gardening and canning with dear friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Treva A. Barnhart and husband Glenn of Seattle, Washington. Additionally, Hollis is survived by three brothers and five sisters who remained- along with their spouses- nurturing and attentive during his long life: Hunter Arehart, Leo Arehart, Mary Lane, Bernice Talbott, Christine Lotts, Alice Puffenbarger, Wayne Arehart and Betty Arehart. Hollis is also survived by his daughter's husband, Marion Wise.
Hollis also leaves behind the nine "Joys of his life" – his six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mike Wise and wife Kelli, Melissa Harris, Dan Barnhart, Matt Barnhart and wife Lauren, Jessie Barnhart and Ginny Barnhart will never forget hearing their Granddad say, "It's H-O-T, hot!" His three great grandchildren – Jacob, Jackson and Jordan – live in Richmond, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at White Hill Church of the Brethren, Stuarts Draft, with Pastor James Chappell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military rites will be provide by the Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339.
Active and honorary pallbearers will be members of his family and his friends.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the church prior to his service.
