Hallie Thompson Bostic of Yakima, WA passed away peacefully March 6, 2014 at the age of 96. Born Sept. 3, 1917 in Yakima, her family moved to the ranch in Harrah when she was 3 years old. She attended Yakima High School and stayed "in town" with her aunts during the week and would return to Harrah for the weekends. After graduating from high school at the age of 16, she babysat for a family and helped on the ranch for one year and then attended Yakima Valley CC for one year. She then went to Central Washington College and it was there that she met her future husband, Tom Bostic, Jr. Together, the following year, they attended the University of Washington where Hallie was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Tom was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. The family Husky-Cougar rivalry started when her sister attended WSC. Hallie graduated with a BA in Sociology and started grad school and worked at the King Co. Welfare Dept. Tom and she were married Oct. 16, 1941. During WW II, Hallie was a temporary defense worker while Tom was a naval aviator.
After the war Hallie and Tom moved to Yakima where Tom worked for what was to become KIMA radio and eventually owned the station and signed on the first television station in Yakima. Other stations in Eastern Washington and Idaho followed. Hallie and Tom enjoyed the broadcasting business and enjoyed the many opportunities for travel associated with it.
While Tom was involved with managing the stations, being Yakima's first mayor, and being involved in many community and business organizations, Hallie supported his endeavors, cherished their children, volunteered with Junior Programs, and enjoyed her church circle, gardening, playing bridge, attending the opera, sewing, and raising multiple litter of kittens and puppies. Tom and she also loved their beach home at Salishan, Oregon and boating on the "Station Break".
After Tom died in 1981, Hallie continued to travel and took pleasure in being with her children and grandchildren as much as they loved being with her. She moved to Seattle in 1998 and kept up with playing bridge and never missed a family event. Hallie was a member of the Seattle Yacht Club and a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Yakima, Yakima Tennis Club and the Yakima Country Club. She will always be remembered for her love for her family, her patience, her sense of humor, her affection for animals, her rose garden, her fudge, and her "collecting."
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Tom Bostic, Jr., and her daughter, Becky Robertshaw. She is survived by her sister, Genevieve Osgard of Gainsville, FL, daughter, Carolyn Whittlesey (Art) of Yarrow Point, WA, son, David Bostic (Jill) of Redmond, WA, grandchildren, Beth Kittle (Jeff), Scott, Christine (Luke), Kendall, and John Whittlesey, and Kailey Bostic and great grandchildren, Kyndra, Alyssa, and Tommy Kittle.
Interment will be on Saturday, April 12th, 2014 at 11:00 am at Terrace Heights Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 12:30 at Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church, Yakima, WA (formerly First Presbyterian Church).
Arrangements under the direction of Keith & Keith Funeral Home, Yakima, WA.
