Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 29, 2011.

Dear Family and Friends –

It is with great sorrow I tell you that Harry Sanders, 94, passed away Sunday March 27th, at 9:45am.

A holocaust survivor, he battled this latest enemy, cancer, courageously. He deserved peace and tranquility having faced so much adversity in his life.
The link below is meant for you to share some of the happier moments with Harry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Social Services Agency (JSSA), 200 Wood Hill Road, Rockville, MD 20850, Attention: Cafe Europa Survivors Fund, In Memory of Harry Sanders.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Sunday, March 27, 2011 Harry Sanders of Rockville, MD; beloved husband of Ursula Sanders, devoted father of Fred Sanders, loving grandfather of Evan Sanders & Jordan Sanders, dedicated father-in-law to Theresa Sanders, fond uncle of David Milner. He was a Holocaust Survivor who actively kept the memories of that tragic era alive for all those who asked. A tailor by trade, he operated Oakland Dry Cleaners in Bayside, NY until 2003, when he and Ursula moved to The Revitz House in Rockville, MD to be close to his son Fred, Theresa and his grandchildren. He relished his family, and friends at The Revitz House, and fully enjoyed his life there.

EUOLOGY FOR HARRY SANDERS

Eulogies are often an expression of someone's affection. For a man who faced so much adversity in his life, my father was a happy go lucky optimist who loved to tell the back stories of the life that made him the exact opposite of what you might expect, considering the circumstances which he faced in life.

A couple of years ago The Ethical Will Project of the Hebrew Home interviewed Harry and Ursula and transcribed a series of interviews. I paraphrase this very interesting reading from Dad's perspective.

A TRUE SURVIVOR MANY TIMES OVER

When he was 16, he joined the Polish Army, said he was 18,
Survived by getting out of Vilna before its Jewish population was inundated.

He hunted Nazi's with inadequate firepower,
Survived by being captured instead of shot.

Put to work at a slave labor camp,
Survived by spreading dung on the fields.

Transported from one slave camp to another in cattle cars,
Train stopped, doors open, large pit in front, Nazi's firing machine guns, drops out of boxcar into pit,
Survived by hiding under dead bodies until dark, only his pinky was grazed.

Nightfall comes, Partisans come out of the woods to inspect the pit grave.
Survived by living with the Partisans in the woods for a year and a half.

Shot at in the woods daily while picking fruit to eat,
Survived by being liberated by the British Army.

Shipped to Newcastle with his Vilna boys, still wasn't free,
Joined King George's Army ready to go to Japan,
Survived because the Atom Bomb dropped before they dropped onto Japan's shores..

Sold toy dogs to stores while all the factories were making war machinery,
Couldn't cook more than salami and eggs,
Survived by marrying Ursula, who could cook a feast from rations on a radiator and hot plate.

Searched for his long lost sister,
heard she was on a displaced persons boat,
Survived by shaming the boat captain into letting him board so they could finally see each other.

Came to New York with his skills as a tailor,
Survived by opening up a small tailor shop, then a Dry Cleaner, then a Dry Cleaning plant with pickup & delivery.

Started a family with Ursula, had a son
We all are now part of that family,
We are all here at this place because he survived,
He survives in our hearts.

Fred, Theresa, Evan & Jordan,

Sharon and I never had the pleasure of meeting Harry, yet somehow we feel we have gotten to know him through all the warm and wonderful tributes that have flowed forward in the wake of his passing. There is no doubt in our minds that he was an amazing gentleman who made an indelible mark in history and left behind a legacy of warmth and goodness in the family that he left behind. Our hearts and thoughts continue to be with you in these days of mourning and loss.

Fred, Tess, Evan and Jordan,
I only had the pleasure of meeting Harry one time, but I felt I knew him well through all of the great stories I have heard! I believe a man's finest legacy is the family he leaves behind, and I know he was so very proud of all of you.
With the passing of time your grief will lessen, but your memories will always remain. I always say that on some busy days I can't remember what I had for breakfast, but I only have to close my eyes and I can remember the smell of my Dad's aftershave or the sound of him whistling along to the radio.
I hope you find comfort in your memories and in the presence of family and friends.
Love,
Nancy

Dear Fred, Theresa, Evan & Jordan-
I knew your Dad was a survivor and fought in the war but I did not know all that he endured and all the struggles he overcame. Thank you for sharing- it made me pause and think. Jordan thank you also for sharing special moments you and your Grandfather had- I know it must have been difficult that day. Evan I know there are special moments with your Grandfather that you will always have. I have shared Henry’s story with many people since the funeral, making a point about how this special human being did not let life’s harsh realities tear him down and dictate his life. He instead was a kind, loving, and great man. Everyone I tell is moved. I know it is difficult to lose such a special person in your lives but the lessons Henry taught us about his strength, endurance and love for others can carry all of us through. Fred & Theresa- you were so very lucky to have this man as your father & father-in law. Thinking of you!

Dear Fred, Theresa, Evan, Jordan,

It was an honor to be with you all and Ursula this past week in paying our respect to your wonderful father. Harry will remain near and dear to our hearts forever. We thank you for bringing him into our lives. How blessed you are to have had him for a father and grandfather. Now it is your job to pass on all the lessons you learned from him--his deep faith in God, the traditions of your faith and heritage, how to be an honorable person respecting all people, how to survive life's most horrific conditions, and how to always be there for your loved ones. That is what we have tried to do with our daughters in honoring my dad and Grandma. How lucky we are that our children had grandparents like Paddy McCarthy, Mary Hamlett and Harry Sanders. It just makes missing them even harder.
We love you,
Kathy, Michael, Kate, Betsy & Caroline

Dear Fred and Theresa,
I have been thinking so much of you and your family and the emptiness you are feeling with the passing of your Dad. No words can ever replace him but knowing that friends and family are expressing their support, love and respect for your Dad, reinforces what a fine man he was to all those he touched with his spirit, wisdom and love. Altho I only met Harry once (and, unfortunately, it was at Mrs Hamlett's funeral), I feel deeply honored to have met him. What a truly amazing life history he endured. His life will be a legacy that Evan and Jordan will be so proud to tell their children about their grandfather, his accomplishments, and the hurdles he overcame through his lifetime. You are in my thoughts at this most difficult time.

Dear Fred, Robert and I feel privileged to have spent time with your parents. Your dad was a special guy, very personable and gregarious. You are a lot like him! I recently lost my dad, and have no family members left, so I will tell you what gives me comfort. I think of my dad daily and remember all the good times we shared. I'm hoping that will be of help to you in this time of loss. Take comfort in knowing that you were a good son.

Fred, Theresa, and Ursula,
Thank you for sharing your wonderful father and husband with us. I told all the guest at the service on Thursday that Theresa and I lost our dad at a very early age and Harry was a perfect fit to receive all the love we had to give. He gave so much love and attention to all of us. He will be missed so much at all the family affairs. May your healing process be smoother knowing that he was so special to us.
