Helvi L. Annala, 95, formerly of Keene, died Sunday evening at Maplewood Nursing Home following a period of declining health.
She was born in Fitchburg, MA on August 9, 1916, the daughter of Henry J. and Lydia (Palomaki) Lappala. She grew up in Fitchburg and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1934.
She married Fred E. Annala on February 11, 1945. They lived in Troy, NH, Townsend, MA, and for 23 years in Rindge, NH.
She was active in several community organizations in Rindge including the Women's Club, the Garden Club, and was a volunteer at the Mothers Garden at the Cathedral of the Pines. She was also a member of the Finnish Center at Saima Park, Fitchburg and also the Keene Senior Center.
She and Fred moved to Keene in 1989 and then to Maplewood in Westmoreland in 2007.
Mrs. Annala and her husband made 7 visits to New Zealand between 1976 and 1996.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Fred Annala of Westmoreland and her son John Annala, and his wife Rosalind, of Portland, Maine and Wellington, New Zealand.
Services for Mrs. Annala will be held on Friday, August 3rd, 2012, 1:00 PM at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH. Calling hours will be held one hour before. Burial will be private.
