Hendryx Eugene Davis, Jr. passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013, in Rancho Mirage, California, as a result of complications related to pneumonia.
Gene, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on January 16, 1925, to Elizabeth and Hendryx E. Davis, Sr. in Omaha, Nebraska. He moved to Oakland, California, with his mother in his youth and made California his home.
After bravely serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Gene went on to attend the University of Southern California and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in International Affairs.
Gene began as a public servant in the early 1950s, working for the U.S. State Department in Washington D. C. In 1958, his career continued when he was employed by Los Angeles County to provide staff support to the Civil Service Commission.
Taking a leave of absence in 1961 to assist the USC School of Public Administration in Pakistan, Gene returned to the County in 1963. He was appointed Director of Purchasing and Stores for the County of Los Angeles in 1970, a position he held until retiring in 1989.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Sandy Davis; his three children, Cassandra Davis Cheyney and husband Tom, Leslie Davis, and Rick Davis; one stepsister, Corky Sitton and husband Les; three granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, his three brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, four nieces, six nephews, and countless friends.
Family and friends will celebrate his life at Rose Hills Memorial Park on September 17, 2013.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley or The Humane Society of the Desert-Orphan Pet Oasis.
