HOLMES, HOWARD FRANK - age 81, of Knoxville,
died Friday March 22 at Shannondale Nursing Center.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gaynell Holmes;
brother Sam Holmes of Sacramento California;
sister Jean Leitch of Toledo Ohio;
son Winston Holmes and wife Michelle Holmes;
daughter Lois Reed and husband Terry Reed;
grand children Joe Reed and Alexis Holmes.
He was born May 21, 1931 in Toledo Ohio and raised
in Red Boiling Springs Tennessee. He earned a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Chemistry from the Tennessee Polytechnic
Institute in 1950 and received his Doctor of Philosophy
Degree in Chemistry in 1958. Howard was a Korean war veteran,
serving in the US Army from 1952 to 1954.
Doctor Holmes was on the research staff of the Chemistry
division of Oak Ridge National Lab from 1959 to 1994.
He was a member of the American Chemical Society and
Electrochemical Society. He authored or co-authored
more than fifty scientific publications and reports in
refereed journals and has given invited talks and
presentations at various scientific conferences and
Howard was a long time member of West End Church of Christ.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Atria
Weston Place for the excellent care given to Howard.
The family will receive friends at 5:00 pm at West End
Church of Christ, 8301 East Walker Springs Lane on
Thursday March 28, with service to follow at 7:00 pm,
Jim Lovell officiating. A private interment for the
family will be held 10:00 am Friday March 29 at Lynnhurst
Greenwood. Arrangements by Lynnhurst/Greenwood Chapel.
