Irene Brayne was born on January 6, 1925 in the central Texas town of Walburg. She was 87 years old at the time of her death, last Thursday, January 3, 2013 in Georgetown, Texas. While growing up in Walburg, Irene was baptized, confirmed, and married at Zion Lutheran Church. She was married to Raymond Otto Bredthauer on December 23, 1944. Shortly after this, they moved to New Jersey where Ray was stationed until he served on a medical ship during WWII. They returned to Austin in 1946, where Irene attended Austin Business School and worked at the Austin State Bank as a bookkeeper, while Ray attended University of Texas. Upon Ray's graduation, they moved to Houston, Texas.
In Houston, Ray worked for Hughes Tool Company as a product engineer while Irene took care of things on the home front. She was an avid seamstress, loved to cook, and loved to care for her family. She especially enjoyed working with plants and was very proud of her yard. Ray and Irene had three children: Stephen (1951), Keith (1954), and Kathryn (1958). After a short move to Houma, Louisiana for Ray's job, they returned to a new home on Lymbar Street in the southwest part of Houston, becoming members of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in 1960. Raymond passed away in 1969. Irene went to work at JC Penney's after that time.
After Ray's death, Irene continued developing new interest and decided to try ballroom dancing. She would sew beautiful long dresses and met many new friends. This is where she met Sidney Brayne, and they were married on May 12, 1979. Irene and Sid continued to live in this home on Lymbar Street until Irene's health required her to relocate to her new residence at the Wesleyan at Scenic in Georgetown in July, 2012.
Sid and Irene have been married for 33 years. They enjoyed ballroom dancing, working in the yard, and playing cards or dominoes with their close friends. Irene enjoyed cooking and Sid enjoyed eating! Irene worked for a while at National Bank in Meyerland and then went back to retail sales at Palais Royal until she retired at the age of 70. Sid and Irene liked to travel and took several trips to England to visit Sid's family. They also toured other countries in Europe at that time. In addition, they took several trips to Alaska to visit Irene's son, Steve and family, and also to Canada to see more of Sid's family and view the Rocky Mountains at the same time. They both continued active membership at Pilgrim Lutheran. Irene enjoyed life, even with the hard times. She was a loving mother, grandmother, spouse, sister, and friend. Irene set a beautiful example of how to live a fulfilling and generous life.
After a lengthy illness which left Irene severely disabled, she left this life to start one with complete peace. She is survived by her husband, Sidney Brayne; son, Steve Bredthauer and wife, Gloria; a daughter, Kathy Birchman. She leaves behind three granddaughters, Deanna Bredthauer, Katrina Birchman, and Maggie Birchman; sisters, Myrtle Hartman and Laverne Domel, brothers, Harry Hobratsch and wife, Eleanore; Raymond Hobratsch, and wife, Viola; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Raymond Bredthauer (deceased in 1969), her son, Keith Bredthauer (deceased in 1991), and parents, Herman and Emilie Hobratsch. Irene's final resting place will be at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
