Jack F. Harmon, retired Postmaster and Sectional Center manager of Raleigh, NC died December 30, 2012 in Raleigh, NC. He was born in Iredell County on April 12, 1917.
He was nominated and with consent of the Senate and President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed as Postmaster of Statesville, NC on March 18, 1954. He was appointed by Postmaster General E.T. Klassen to the position of Postmaster/Sectional Center Manager in Raleigh in 1972. He was President of the NC National Association of Postmasters and served two terms on the Raleigh Historical Properties Commission and received the News and Observer's "Tarheel of the Week" award December 10, 1972. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Mr. Harmon was a member of the Southern Pines United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Southern Pines Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. As an avid golfer, Jack was a member of Southern Pines Golf Club.
Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Louise Holcomb Harmon; daughters Diane Harmon Lamont and her husband Dean of Raleigh; Beverly Harmon Layne of Fort Mill, SC; five grandchildren, Debbie Lamont Lewis and husband Paul, Todd Harmon, Jeff Lamont and wife Tamara, Bryan Lamont and wife Emily, Kristin Layne and husband Chris, and 6 great-grandchildren, Ashley Lewis, Hannah Lewis, Joshua Lamont, Shane Lamont, Kaydence Miller and Holcomb Lamont. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack F. Harmon, Jr., brother, J. Matney Harmon and sister, Mildred Harmon Goodman.
A memorial service with Military Honors will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, on Wednesday, January 2nd at 2:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
