James ("Jimmy") Roy Corr, Jr., passed away last Friday, December 6, 2013 in San Diego, California.
Jimmy was predeceased by his parents Roy and Margaret Corr. He is survived by his brother Joe Corr (Debra); the loving members of the Leary and Phillips families in North Carolina; his dear friends Carrie Clark, Michael Carter (Madeleine), Kevin Jones (Dyna), and Trampus Thomason (Nichole); and his marina family Jan and Victoria.
Jimmy was born on March 3, 1968 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At a young age Jimmy moved to San Diego, attending Hardy Elementary School and Horace Mann Middle School. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1986.
Jimmy earned a degree in English from San Diego State University and went on to obtain his teaching credential. He shared his love for learning and exploring as a teacher for the San Diego Unified School District at Kennedy and Encanto elementary schools.
Jimmy's love of salt water started with surfing. For years at a time, he would surf every day of the year. Surfing took him up and down the coast with memorable trips to Baja with Mike, Kevin and Trampus. His expertise around the water expanded when his father taught him to sail. His knowledge of sailboat repair, maintenance and upgrade blessed his family and friends over three decades and was reflected in his own boat, the "Red Jacket," which frequently graced San Diego Bay.
During and after college, he spent many summers sharing his passion for sailing with people with special needs at Camp Able in Coronado. A highlight for many campers was sailing on the bay with Jimmy, where his skillful handling of the boat and kind demeanor eased the fear of any first-time sailors.
In his life, cut much too short, Jimmy formed deep and caring bonds with a wide circle of friends. Anyone fortunate enough to spend time with Jimmy Corr soon realized he was a man of great worth – one tough enough to fight a courageous medical battle while remaining kind, gentle, generous, compassionate, loyal and funny. Every ocean sunset will carry a loving memory of Jimmy for all who were lucky enough to know him well.
To celebrate Jimmy's life, those who knew and cared about him are invited to a reception on Sunday, December 15, 2013, at 3:00 p.m., at the Island Palms Hotel and Marina, 2051 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego, CA 92106.
