James W. Kordig
1924 ~ 2013
James passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. He was born December 23, 1924 in Chicago to James Sr., and Irene Kordig. In February 1942 he graduated from Lane Technical High School in Chicago and started working at Swift and Co., in the union stockyards as a co-op student for the Illinois Institute of Technology. He was honorably discharged from the Navy after WWII having served in the amphibious forces as an electronic technician mate aboard LCI 740 and participated in disarming and surrender of the Japanese in their TRUK Lagoon naval base.
He attended Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where he earned BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering. He worked at a division of Bell and Howell for 13 years and was granted a U.S. Patent. For 5 years he was an instructor of physical science and chemistry in the Chicago Junior College System. He was Sunday School Superintendent for the Morton Grove Illinois United Church of Christ and Sunday school teacher of the adult class. In Utah he was scoutmaster for the Westvale Presbyterian Church in Granger, UT and he worked for 28 years at the Bacchus Works of Hercules Aerospace Company on numerous Army, Navy and Air Force Rocket Engineering Programs including Spirit, Minuteman, Polaris, Poseidon, Trident, and Pershing. He also worked on the advanced space shuttle engineering program for NASA and published a monograph of rocket design criteria for NASA. As a member, he published technical papers about various aspects of rocketry for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in which he was a past chairman of the Utah Section. He was active in the Wasatch Mountain Club and loved outdoor activities of skiing, fishing, boating, camping and watching University of Utah basketball games with his sweetheart, Josephine. He is survived by two daughters living in California, Janis and Nancy, granddaughter Brigitte, and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Brannon. Preceded in death by a son, Tim.
Funeral service will be held Monday, November 18, 2013 at Evans and Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, SLC at 11:00 a.m. with visitation prior to the service at 10:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, please made a donation to a charity of your choice.
