Les funéraillCUSHMAN, Janet Hunter (Chafee) (1920 - 2014)Janet Hunter Chafee Cushman died peacefully in her 94th year on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at The Sunrise in Beaconsfield, Quebec. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Jan graduated from Vassar College in 1942 and went on to serve in WWII as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy where she worked in decoding, first in New York and later in Hawaii. While stationed near Honolulu, Jan met her future husband, the late Robert Cushman, who was also a naval officer. The two married in 1946 and moved to Montreal in 1952 where they raised their family. Jan became a Canadian citizen in 1992.Jan and her husband were among the early pioneers to organize a support system for the intellectually handicapped on the West Island of Montreal. She volunteered for over 50 years for the West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped. Jan worked hard to maintain relationships throughout her life with a vast network of friends from across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. No matter where a family member was headed, Jan had a connection. Jan loved the great outdoors, sports and animals. She was an avid cross-country skier at her beloved Morgan Arboretum. During her summers, she could often be found hiking in New England, sailing in Maine, or on the tennis court, where she was a sought after doubles partner. Jan always had at least one dog until age 84, when she moved into an apartment.Jan was blessed with boundless curiosity and a range of interests that included history, art history, politics and literature. Dinners at her table were ripe with political discussion and no meal was complete without reference to her ever-present atlas.Jan will be missed by her loving children Robert (Lynne MacGregor), Amey, Hope (David Cape), John (Heather Lawson) and Charlotte (Enzo Cefis), and by her grandchildren, Robert, Hunter, Alex, Emily, Tim, Claire, Jenny, Adriana and James. Predeceased by the accidental death of her husband in 1980, Jan bravely rallied and inspired her family during a difficult time. Jan's family would like to thank the staff at The Sunrise in Beaconsfield for the care and support they provided over the past three years and particularly in her final days. Her family would also like to thank her caregivers, Marian and Anne LeBlanc.A memorial service will be held at The Church of Saint John the Baptist, 233 Ste-Claire Avenue, Pointe Claire on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at The Forest & Stream Club at 1800 Lakeshore Drive, Dorval.
