Last week Jean's body rested and her soul was liberated. She joined her beloved Donald, who she has missed terribly since his passing in 2010, and all of the other loved ones who had passed before her, in heaven. Jean and Donald were married for 59 years, during which time they lived life fully and loved each other deeply. They travelled, worked, laughed, danced, and raised two sons, Craig and Douglas. Jean was a Christian woman in belief and lifestyle, treating everyone she met with warmth and respect. She was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she graduated from Macalester College. She completed her nurse's training at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and quickly advanced to be the Head Nurse overseeing the operating room at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul. Tiring of the northern winters she took a job in the Panama Canal Zone, where she met her soulmate, Donald, who was stationed there while serving in the United States Navy. They married and moved to San Diego, started a family, and remained in their home in Del Cerro for the duration of their lives. When her boys were old enough Jean returned to work as an R.N. at the UCSD Medical Center, retiring in the early 1980's. She was an active volunteer for many organizations, including the Cub Scouts, Little League, the Assistance League, the Del Cerro Women's Club, and the PTA. In addition, she helped many friends and family members using her nursing skills to make their lives easier. Jean loved music and dancing. She was a soloist in her church choir as a youth, and could always be found tapping her toes to the rhythm when a favorite tune was played. She also enjoyed playing sports and being a spectator when her boys played. She was a true animal lover, as well, spoiling her many pets over the years. She and Donald regularly supported the SPCA and the San Diego Zoological Society, as well as many other charities. But Jean's main passion was her family. Always the matriarch, she hosted countless family events, enjoying the opportunity to fawn over her four grandchildren and four great-grand-children. Jean, you will be missed deeply, but we know that you are in a far better place. Thank you for touching all of the lives that you did and making this world a better place. Jean is survived by her sons Craig and Douglas, grandchildren Christina, Tyler, Travis, and Shelby, and great-grand-children Jace, Sawyer, Jackson, and Walker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lillian Hurst, her sister Lois, and her husband Donald. Special thanks to Barbara, Diane, Jim and Patty, Ricky and Nancy, and the UCSD Med Center. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, sdhumane.org.
