John D. Ahern

January 16, 1919 - January 2, 2012
Mr. John D. Ahern, age 92, of Biddeford Pool, ME and formerly of Lynn, died on Monday, Jan. 2nd at the N. E. Sinai Hospital, Stoughton, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife Berniece L. (Poirier) Ahern and his daughter Eileen P. Monroe.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Lucy B. (McCormack) Ahern, and was the youngest of 13 children. He graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1936. He lived in New Jersey before moving to Maine 30 years ago.
John was a First Sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps during WWII and fought with the 3rd. Marine Division on Bougainville and Guadalcanal.
He worked in sales for 30 years. Before retiring in 1980, he was a manufacturer's representative for 22 years for the Hedstrom Co. of Bedford, PA and worked out of their Manhattan offices.
John was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Biddeford.
He leaves a son John D. "Dan" Ahern, Jr. and his wife Helene of Biddeford, ME, a daughter Ellen C. Popp and her husband John of North Yarmouth, ME, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his grandniece, best friend and constant companion for the last decade Lena Phillips of Stoughton.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 8 AM from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home 157 Maple Street, Lynn. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church Lynn at 9 AM. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday 3-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 370 7th Avenue, 3rd Floor, Room 320, New York City, NY 10001.
