John J. Dietrich, 72, formerly of South St., Marcellus, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011 in the Crown Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Cortland, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Lackawanna, NY, on June 3, 1939, the only son of the late Joseph and Eugenia Needham Dietrich.
John retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1979 from the US Navy after 22 years of service, including several years on the USS Constellation.
He earned a Bachelor's Degree at RIT and began a new career as a teacher at Monroe BOCES, Spencerport.
He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 7707 in Spencerport, NY, a life member of the VFW Post 2250, Hornell and the American Legion Post 0846, Canisteo, NY.
John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping; also attending Buffalo Bills' games with his family and friends.
Surviving is his wife of 11 years, Harriett L. Bellinger Dietrich of Marietta, NY; five sons, John Dietrich, Jr. of Alfred, NY; Bill (Sheryl) Dietrich of Cape Coral, FL; Bob Dietrich of Phoenix, AZ; Tom Dietrich of Phoenix, AZ and Don Dietrich of Canisteo, NY. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Amanda, Danee and Catie Dietrich and several step children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Sherri Dietrich.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Grace Chapel, 1674 Rt. 20, Skaneateles, NY. The family will accept friends following the service in the church hall.
