John Hallstrom was born October 21, 1954 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Sioux City, IA, second son of Vernon and Harriet Hallstrom, who preceded him to Glory. He was baptized in the Catholic Church on November 14, 1954, a faithful member of St. Boniface Catholic Church until moving to Mesa, AZ in September, 1965.
John began attending St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ in 1969 where he first heard and believed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a member of the St. Andrews' Singers from 1969 – 1975, traveling all over the United States, sharing the Gospel through music, two loves of his life. Another of his loves was drawing and he often thrilled his children by drawing caricatures which he included in their school sack lunches.
John was a 1973 graduate of Westwood High School, Mesa, AZ.
He was a Vietnam-Era Veteran of the US Army, proudly serving his country from 1974 – 1981.
Professionally, John worked as a mechanical designer and most recently as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix and Banner Baywood Hospital in Mesa.
As a follower of Jesus Christ, John had a deep love for Missions and reaching the world with the Gospel. He made four trips to Ukraine and one trip to Russia in the 1990's and early 2000's with International School Project, training teachers to present a Judeo-Christian Ethics curriculum in their classrooms. In 2004, he traveled to the Philippines with a team from his home church (Mesa Baptist Church, where he served on the Missions Committee and as a Deacon), in partnership with Delta Ministries, sharing the Gospel in homes and schools in and around Manilla.
John married his "beautiful wife", Elaine (Langlois), on June 25, 2005 and in the years since, together they traveled to England, Belgium, France and Thailand seeking a place of international service for the Lord.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by seven children and seven grandchildren: Anders and Rachel Hallstrom of Gilbert, AZ, Laura Hallstrom of Buckeye, AZ, Jenifer Rittenhouse (ShaeLynn and Kylah) of Gilbert, AZ, Justin and Valerie Rittenhouse (Daniella and Owen) of Marana, AZ, James Rittenhouse (Conor and Maxwell) of Glendale, AZ, and Jessica Rittenhouse (Makenna) of Gilbert, AZ. Additionally, he is survived by his brother C. David and Jo Ann Hallstrom, 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 4 grandnephews and 7 grandnieces, several aunts and cousins.
John entered into Jesus' Presence on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.
John will be remembered for his infectious laugh and broad grin, his quick wit and amazing sense of humor, his love for music and his skilled guitar playing, and his ability to encourage and uplift those with whom he came in contact. John was well-loved and will be greatly missed!
