The exceptional life of John Johnstone ended peacefully on Thursday November 22nd,
2012 at the age of 79. John spent his last days in the comfort of his room at St. Joseph’s Villa surrounded by his sons and friends, as well as the devoted staff who cherished his presence during his time at the Villa.
Born in Scotland on May 1st 1933, John immigrated to Canada in 1951. He settled in Hamilton where he worked as an iron worker at Stelco.
John met and fell in love with May (Darroch) whom he married in 1955. John and May raised their family in Ancaster, Ontario, spending countless hours at Spring Valley Arena watching their sons play hockey. John’s wife May passed away in 1987. John leaves behind 3 children, Cindy, John, and Cameron (Colleen) and 5 grandchildren, Olivia, Brittany, Madison, John “Luke”, and Thomas.
A born entrepreneur, John and his best friend, business partner, and fellow Scotsman Johnny Cameron ran dances for the adult community at The Serbian Hall, and Town Casino during the 1960’s and 70’s. John’s great passion became the Bingo business in the 60’s, where together with his partner they created the chain of Delta Bingo Halls. The Delta Bingo Group has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for local charities and not for profit organizations.
The family would like to thank the great staff at Hamilton General Hospital Cardiac Care Unit including Dr. Vellianou, Amanda Smith and the phenomenal staff at St. Joseph’s Villa for their tremendous care and compassion for our father. We would also like to thank Dr. Kevin Teoh whose unparalleled skill gave us 10 additional years with our father.
His family will receive friends at the Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Ave. E. on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A celebration of John's life will take place on Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 at 11 am in the chapel followed by interment in Mt. Hamilton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Joseph’s Villa or The Hamilton Cardiac Care Unit would be greatly appreciated.
