John Joseph Mortlock, also known as “Johnny” to his siblings, left this world at the young age of 68 on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 after a brief, but intense battle with cancer. He resided in Middleburg, FL the 12 years prior to his passing, and was a very active member at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.
John was born on August 27, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York to parents Arthur Francis Mortlock and Madeline Catherine Warner. He was the youngest of five siblings: Arthur F. Mortlock, Joan Kathleen Mortlock, James Edward Mortlock, and Barbara Ann LoCasto.
John joined the US Air Force at the tender age of 18 years, as he was eager to serve our country. Due to the Vietnam War, he was immediately sent overseas, where he met his future bride, Zosita B. Mortlock (Borlasa). They married on October 4, 1967 at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines and their marriage endured for 46 loving years.
John served 25 years in the US Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, attaining of the rank of Master Sargent. He was an avid bowler in his youth, and had a life-time interest in collecting and studying model trains, as well as tinkering with mechanical clocks. John enjoyed the opportunities to travel that his career afforded him. Besides residing in California, Texas, South Carolina and Florida, he also resided in England, West Germany and the Philippines. He also had the good fortune to travel to other countries around the globe. His favorite assignments were England and Germany, where he was able to visit and experience first-hand the history of WWI and WWII.
John was a devout, practicing Catholic and an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his loving wife, Zosita B. Mortlock, and his children: Joyce and her husband, Ron Chase, Richard Mortlock, Sheila Ojeda and Christopher Mortlock. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Xochi Ojeda Mortlock, Jonathon and Taryn Chase, Kyle Mortlock and Gabriel Mortlock. John is survived by his sister, Barbara and her husband Joe LoCasto of Maryville, Tennessee, along with many nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Holly Hill Funeral Home, 3601 Old Jennings Rd, Middleburg, Fl 32068. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 11 AM at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. With interment to follow at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2 PM.
