The Hon. John J.P. Ryan
Judge John J.P. Ryan, a lifelong resident of Stamford, passed away on May 1, 2013 in Newton, Massachusetts. Born in Stamford on August 31, 1932, he was the son of the late Daniel E. and Mary Conroy Ryan. He attended Stamford Public Elementary Schools and graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School in 1950, Fordham University in 1954, and Fordham University School of Law in 1957. He met his wife Julia Theresa Ryan in Stamford in 1953. They were married in 1956 and resided together in Stamford until Julia's passing away in 2009.
John is survived by his three children Ellen Ryan, John Ryan, and Sheila Ryan Barnett and his two grandchildren Elizabeth and Gannon Barnett.
He is also survived by his nephews Thomas Henneberger, Daniel E. Ryan III, Michael T. Ryan, Patrick J. Ryan, Thomas J. Ryan, James D. Ryan and Kieran M. Ryan; his nieces Elizabeth Ryan Lane, Mary Katherine (Kate) Ryan Herman, Susan Ryan DeBrisco, Margaret Ryan Massimi, Sharon Ryan LaCrosse and Denise Ryan; and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his two brothers Daniel E. Ryan, Jr. and W.Patrick Ryan, his sister Mary Ryan Stafford, and his niece Marianne Williams.
Prior to joining the bench, John practiced family law and later served as Chief Clerk of the Stamford Common Pleas and Superior Courts. He was appointed a Superior Court Judge in 1980 and became a Senior Judge in 1997.
John, or Jack to almost everyone, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. We will always remember his love for long walks and longer drives, his special sense of humor and the great conversations, and how he loved to play with his grandchildren. John passed away in peace with his daughter Sheila and her husband John by his side. The wake will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7th at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street in Stamford.
