John Shelden, 86, of Miami, Florida, formerly of Lansing Michigan, died Saturday April 13, 2013 in Miami Baptist Hospital of natural causes.
Survivors include his ex-wife, Jeane M. (Johnson) Shelden; four daughters: Carolyn (Edmund) Smith, Pamela (Clifford) Steiner, Loretta Aul, and Mary Ann (Sameh) Behiry; and one son, Michael John (Cathy) Shelden. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and six older siblings and spouses; Aline (Roy) McCartney, Ralph (Jeannie), Harry (Dorothy), Clyde (Edith), Eugene (Marjorie) Shelden, and Florence (Joe) Robbins. In addition, he was preceded in death by one month, his son-in-law, Jeffrey Aul.
John was born April 12, 1927 in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Ralph and Clio (Mansfield-Hooper) Shelden. He attended Eastern High School, then served as a Radar Man in the US Navy in 1945 during WWII. Among the ships he served on were the USS Oahu and the Appalachian. After the war, he attended Michigan State College on the GI bill, and later the Air Force ROTC program, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree. He served as a 1st Lieutenant Military Police Officer in the Air Force during the Korean conflict, and had exceptional skills as a sharp shooter. After discharge, he worked at GM Motors in the coach division in Pontiac, Michigan as an engineer. Tired of Michigan winters, he transferred to Pratt-Whitney Aircraft in West Palm Beach, Florida during the NASA build-up program. Eventually, John took his skills into the teaching arena, and he retired from Miami-Dade Public Schools after 23 years of teaching math. During his later years, he enjoyed serving on the board of directors of his townhouse association.
