John Joseph "Jack" Sherwood III, 67, of East Hanover, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. They will receive relatives and friends at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., on Tuesday, 3-9 PM. The Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be offered at St. Rose of Lima Church, 312 Ridgedale Ave., East Hanover, NJ (07936) on Wednesday at 9:45 AM and everyone is invited directly to church. The committal service will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Raised in Newark, John graduated from St. Benedicts Prep, class of 1964. He served his country honorably as a sergeant in the U.S. Army First Air Calvary Division in the 2nd Battalion, Fifth Cavalry Regiment, also known as the "Infamous 2/5" from 1966 to 1968 with a combat tour in Vietnam from 1967-1968. He was a recipient of the Army Commendation Medal for action taken March 11, 1967 and many other citations and medals for conducting numerous "search and destroy" missions as a member of a "Hunter Killer Team".
John began his law enforcement career with the Newark Police Department from 1969 to 1972 and joined the Essex County Sheriff's Office in 1972. John rose through the ranks of the Sheriff's Office serving in numerous divisions and retiring in February, 2004 attaining the rank of Deputy Chief.
Above all his accomplishments he was a loving family man. He enjoyed spending time down the shore in Belmar with his grandchildren, the Sunday dinners at his house surrounded by his family; he was also an avid on and off-shore fisherman especially fishing on his boat with his three sons, all of whom followed him in law enforcement careers, and his grandchildren. John also found time for "muscle cars" and telling stories!
John is survived by his beloved wife of forty-three years, Beatrice Lucille (DeMarco) and his three sons: John J. IV and wife Elizabeth and their children, John V (Jack) and Sarah; Michael D. and wife Jennifer and their children, Nicholas and Caitlin; Robert C. and his wife Melissa and their children Megan and Sean. He is also survived by his cousins who were like brothers and sisters: Marlene Walsh, Harold and Kathy Welsh, George and Joan Welsh, Jimmy and Pat Welsh, Sarah Welsh, Billy and Betty Connelly, George and Anita Connelly and Michael and Judy Connelly along with his mother-in-law Patricia DeMarco and his loving brothers and sisters-in-law whom he cherished dearly.
