TANNER, John David Jr. "Johnnie" – 58 of Stewiacke, passed away in his home on Thursday October 20, 2011. Born in Truro on February 18, 1953, he was a son of the late Dorothy (Holland) and John Tanner. Johnnie started working in Truro at Crossley Carpet Mills, a.k.a. Tandus, CAW Local 4612, in 1973. His peers and friends in his community described him "as a genuine type of guy", "a real character" and, "a valued employee" Johnnie retired from Tandus in 2006 due to health issues. . Johnnie was nominated and was the first to receive the Tandus Hero Award. Johnnie enjoyed participating and helping out those less fortunate and dedicated a lot of his time actively collecting recyclables throughout the year and donating the proceeds to charities such as the Relay for Life, Children's Wish Foundation, and Christmas Daddies plus many more. Johnnie always seemed to know how to make change amount to something. Prior to working at Tandus, he worked at Kent's Farm in Stewiacke as a boy during the summers and for one year. In Johnnie's teen years he was a member the Sea Cadets in Truro. He was seldom idle, even in forced retirement. Johnnie was a member of the Holy Trinity Church. Johnnie loved those around him with unconditional love. He thoroughly enjoyed coffee at Tim Horton's in Stewiacke with his buds. He will be sadly missed by his surviving family: Fern Quillan (Clarence deceased), Alberta; George (Charlotte), Brookfield; Wayne (Marilyn), Brookfield; Margaret, Truro; Stephanie (Nicholas), Ontario, 13 nieces and nephews, 12 cousins. He predeceased by his Mother, Dorothy; Father, John; Brothers, Christopher, Joseph, Martin and Norman (twins), cousins Tammy, Ryan, David, and Donald. Visitation will be 7-9pm Monday and 2-4 and 7-9pm Tuesday in the Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2 Shubenacadie from where the funeral will be held 2pm Wednesday, Rev. Lloyd Ripley officiating. A reception will be held in the funeral home following the service. Private burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fort Ellis. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Lodge That Gives or one of Johnnie's favorite charities.
